Normally I’m not a fan of books created by someone other than the original author, but this one is beautiful. The Snowman and the Snowdog, based on characters by Raymond Briggs The best part of a wordless book is that your child can tell the story to you. After exploring his home with the snowman, the two go on a magical journey. This is a classic wordless picture book about a boy who builds a snowman and sees it come to life. This was fun to read aloud, and my Three and I liked to study the pictures. I love that the snowmen are perfectly brought to life and that all the party food is some form of snow or ice. The best part of all are the illustrations, which completely captured us. This is such a fun book about snowmen who gather for a party to celebrate the first snow. But read alone it’s a cute story about two mice who work together to win the town contest to build the biggest snowman. Having read The Biggest Pumpkin Ever and The Biggest Apple Ever, this book’s story line feels like a repeat. The Biggest Snowman Ever, by Steven Kroll The book has just a few words, but it doesn’t matter because the illustrations steal the show.

This is a super simple book about a little child making a snowman. But both my boys and I really enjoyed the collage style illustrations that tell the story of an entire family of snow people in this book. I realize I’m in the minority here, but I find the collage illustrations hard to make out, and the text often fails to engage my kids.

Normally I am not a big fan of Ehlert’s books.

They have a lot of fun together until the snowman melts – but George builds him again with the next big snowfall. George builds the perfect snowman in his backyard, and after he’s added the final touch the snowman comes to life. Personally, I couldn’t get into this book, but it was a favorite of my Three and especially my Five. This is a simple little board book with the familiar song as its text.
